Canada is removing its barriers for International Students working in Essentials Services

Canadian International Students

Canada is making it easier for Canada international students to join the fight against coronavirus

Canada International students in Canada will now be allowed to work full time if they are employed in an essential service.

The government recognizes that international students who are already in Canada have the ability to help meet the challenges presented by COVID-19. As a result, Canada has temporarily removed the regulation that limits international students from working more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session.

“Immigrants, temporary foreign workers and international students are making important contributions as frontline workers in health care and other essential service sectors,” Marco Mendicino, Canada’s immigration minister said in a media release. “We know and value their efforts and sacrifices to keep Canadians healthy and ensure the delivery of critical goods and services.”

  • Energy and utilities
  • Information and Communication Technologies
  • Finance
  • Health
  • Food
  • Water
  • Transportation
  • Safety
  • Government
  • Manufacturing

Employers and international students may consult the government’s guide to determine if the change applies to their line of work.

This new measure will be in effect until August 31, 2020.

Express Entry

Among the LAAs issued in the April 23 draw, seven went to candidates with a valid profile in the federal Express Entry system.

Candidates who qualify for the Express Entry pool are ranked based on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score that considers human capital factors such as

  • age,
  • work experience,
  • education, and
  • language ability.

The highest-scoring candidates are invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence through regular draws from the Express Entry pool.

Those who receive a provincial nomination are awarded an additional 600 CRS points and are effectively guaranteed an invitation to apply from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Express Entry candidates who received a provincial nomination from Manitoba in this draw declared a valid Express Entry ID and provided a job seeker validation code.

Skilled Workers in Manitoba

A total of 93 LAAs went to candidates with an EOI in Manitoba’s Skilled Workers in Manitoba Stream, which provides a pathway to permanent residence for eligible temporary foreign workers in the province and international graduates of Manitoba post-secondary educational institutions.

In order to be considered, candidates must be working in Manitoba and have a full-time, permanent job offer from their employer, among other criteria.

Skilled worker EOIs are given a score out of 1,000 and the highest-ranked are issued LAAs.

The lowest-ranked Skilled Workers in Manitoba candidate selected in this draw had a score of 489.

Skilled Workers Overseas

Another 25 LAAs went to candidates in the Skilled Workers Overseas Stream.

Skilled Worker Overseas candidates needed a score of 714 and above to be eligible for an LAA in the April 23 EOI draw.

This will effectively guarantee that they will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.

Express Entry manages applications for three economic class immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker ProgramFederal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class.

Candidates who are eligible for Express Entry are ranked on human capital factors such as work experience, education, official language proficiency, and age. They are then given a CRS score.

The highest-scoring candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence through federal Express Entry draws.

About the Alberta Express Entry Stream

Express Entry candidates need to be working in an occupation that supports Alberta’s “economic development and diversification priorities” in order to be eligible for an invitation through the Albert Express Entry Stream.

The AINP does not provide a list of eligible occupations.

While it is not necessary to have a job offer to be eligible for this stream, the AINP says it may give priority to candidates who meet the following three criteria:

  • a job offer and/or work experience in Alberta;
  • a degree from a Canadian post-secondary institution and a valid job offer; or
  • a parent, child or sibling already living in the province.

So far this year, Alberta has issued 887 invitations to Express Entry candidates. In 2019, Alberta issued a total of 11,137 invitations through the Alberta Express Entry Stream.
