Time to pack! You’ve finally decided that an international university is the best path for you and now it’s time to start planning your move. Before leaving high school, there are a few important things to keep in mind when moving abroad:
1. Make a checklist of things you want to do in your new city.
The 1st step is to make a list of things you want to do in your new city. This allows you to determine what is important and how long it will take. So make sure your list items are as specific as possible.
This also helps to get everything done! With so many new experiences at once, it’s easy to lose track of time and nothing beats having something great planned but not having enough money or energy. that are left over after work when all the other great stuff needs to be done right away.
2. Register for university counselling.
Enrolling in college counselling is a critical step in the transition process. The orientation will help you and your family learn more about the school, its policies and expectations.
It is also a great opportunity to meet other students from all over the world who are moving to their new country of residence.
You can register for orientation during your home visit or apply through your high school’s website after receiving confirmation of your application.
3. Master everyday vocabulary.
Studying abroad requires you to know the basic words and phrases in a foreign language. They should also be able to ask for help in their language if needed.
4. Learn cultural cues.
It is important to know how people in different cultures greet each other so that you can use the appropriate language and gestures.
5. Pack light
Clothing can be bought abroad. It’s important that you only bring what you need for your trip and not a bunch of stuff you don’t know what to do with. Bring items that can be worn in a variety of ways (eg, a scarf can be used as a cape, shawl, or headband). This saves space in your luggage and ensures that it does not get damaged during transport.
6. Use mobile apps to help you
They will want to use mobile apps to help you settle. Some of the best are Duolingo and Google Translate, which are free and accessible from your phone.
These apps help to learn different languages very quickly by doing simple tasks like translating words from one language to another language.
There are many useful tools that make navigating a new country much easier; These include Google Maps (which is likely already installed on the device you’re using), Yelp (which allows users to search for restaurants by location), Waze (a traffic app), and Mapquest (a mapping tool).
7. Get enough sleep
Sleep is important for everyone, but it is especially important for students studying abroad. The reason? You may be jet lagged or not sleeping due to travel and not on a regular schedule.
8. You don't have to worry about studying abroad!
Studying abroad is a great experience. You will have the opportunity to meet new people and learn about other cultures, which will help you grow as a person.
It is also a great way to travel, explore new places & become independent if you are not from one country or another.
